Hi I found what looks like an external cd drive case but I am not 100% sure of it's use. It is a type that connects to the computer or printer via a parallel connection. The thing is I don't see inside when the drive is in place how the data part connects to the case. Anyway here are some images for you to see what I mean. I want to use this device to install win95 on an old notebook that only has a floppy drive. Do you think this will work?

It's not gonna work. How about removing the HDD from the laptop, slaving it off a computer that does have a CD drive, then copying the contents of the Win95 folder from the CD to the HDD. Reinstall the HDD, boot off a Win95 boot floppy, then run the installation from the Win95 folder that you just created.

OK I don't have an adapter to do that but I could put it in another notebook. Is there a way to do it that way? I don't know how to copy files onto a hard drive without an os so if there is a way to do it in dos can you tell me....

Does the other notebook have a floppy & optical drive? Here's what you'll need to do...
- Swap the HDD, then boot off a Win95 boot floppy.
- Partition & format the HDD the way you want it.
- Reboot with the Win95 boot floppy & select "with CD-ROM support". Watch the screen to see which letter is assigned to the CD drive...the screen will eventually stop at the DOS prompt A:\>
- Then all you have to do is copy the win95 folder & all it's contents from CD to the HDD. You could do it by using XCOPY, but I suggest you do it like this:- 1st you'll need to create a win95 folder on the C:\ drive. To do that, type the following at the A:\ prompt
A:\>md C:\win95 [press enter]
Then you have to copy the contents from the CD to the folder that you just created. For example, let's say your CD drive is given the letter E. Pop the Win95 CD in the drive, then type the following:
A:\>copy E:\win95\*.* C:\win95
It will probably take a few minutes to copy all the files. Once it's done, swap the HDD back into the laptop.
- Boot off the Win95 boot floppy, change to the win95 directory & run setup from there. Like so:
A:\>C:\ [press enter]
C:\>cd win95 [press enter]
C:\win95\setup [press enter]If done correctly, setup will begin.

Yep the other notebook has both a FDD and optical drives. I experimented a bit last night but your instructions are much better than what I tried. Wow your very clear in your instructions that's great!!! Bad news is ...well maybe not...I have bought for only 99cAUD a set of win3.1 floppies. Well good for me!!! But I certainly will save this info as I have win95 anyway on cd. I have a friend that is sending this little notebook(Toshiba Satellite 100ct)and many other pc's to an African country so your instructions will come into use. I have always wanted to know how to copy the contents in the way you described as I deal with a lot of old machines. There are also many machines that I have to access before being shipping to Africa. Most of them I will install Linux but there are some machines that will get windows. Thanks heaps!!!!
