If you had between 200-250 to spend on upgrading a 1.2 ghz, crappy mobo, 384 mb ram slug, ummmm, what would you buy? who am i kidding, I need an upgrade, desperately!!! Iv'e only got 250 bucks max to spend. Mainly i need a new motherboard and CPU (combo would be nice) and maybe some RAM, but i could get that another time. My case supports ATX, Micro ATX, and...... something else, i dont remember. I've tried to research it myself, but ive been out of the game for so long, stuffs just crazy to me now. And please, no silly remarks like "santa will bring you one", please

It depends on what you're trying to do. For $200-250, you could put together a S754 system...it would be better than what you have, but would have limited upgradeability. Here's a few ideas:

CPU - AMD Sempron 64 2800+ for $75.70

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819104245

Motherboard - GIGABYTE GA-K8NS Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250 for $59

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128259

RAM - CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB)PC3200 for $81

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145440

Get it all for $221

i dont really know what the difference in socket types are, really. I do know that compaq originally made this POS, bought in 2003, put in an extra HD, DVD burner, CD Burner, extra stick of 128 MB RAM (pathetic, eh?) Nvidia Geforce MX4000 (pathetic, eh?), and i yanked out the floppy. It is (was) a Compaq presario 5520 CA (i belive). I dont really care about re-upgradeabilty right now. If i do need a major up in the future, ill just get a new PC. For now, im strapped for cash tho.

Sorry the link didn't work...it's for a 2.53Ghz celeron and Gigabyte motherboard for $69.95. Seems the pcclub site is down this evening...it'll be back.

Jam,

Merry Christmas... your stuff looks good too. Maybe some additional local deals will appear here in the next day or two.

If Compaq made it then you are in for some work. Most OEM computers use power supplies and board connectors that will only work with their components.

You could easily fry your new components if you are not careful.
