Every so often, after I move my mouse or while I'm moving my mouse, the cursor will go nuts. For example, it will jump somewhere on the screen, or just move around a lot in one area (when it does this, if I let go of the mouse it keeps going until I move it again).
Is this a problem with my mouse, cable, PS/2 port, or OS? (By the way it is an optical mouse)
Thanks!

Could be something to do with the mousepad you are using. Seems like there was a virus that affected the cursor.

Mousepad is fine, I've tried 5 different ones. My virus scanner is up to date and shows no viruses (as of about 2 hours ago at least)
This has been happening for about 3 weeks now, and I've had the mouse about a year and a half.

acyf: Did you see the part where I said "By the way it is an optical mouse"?
johnoh: I'm using the standard Windows driver and its worked for more than a year flawlessly so I don't see how that would affect anything.

well could be a under powered usb?
or maybe dirt or a tiny hair got in the sensor this can seriously screw a mouse.
try removing it from your system through system manage.
unplugging it then shut down plug it back in A Different USB PORT then restart
or buy a new mouse

Also like I said before, It's plugged in via PS/2. I've already checked for hairs and such and found none.

Check for conflicts in the Device Mangler!
808If its a Microsoft mouse, try a different mouse!

Typically there aren't conflicts with PS/2 mice (verified there are none in the device manager)
And no its not a Microsoft mouse

I just encountered the same behavior last night and have been scanning web for similar complaints - and better yet a solution. I am running optical mouse on IBM T40 laptop. OS is Windows XP Professioal. I have used many optical and wheel mice in this and never had a problem. Currently using a small Targus optical mouse as I am travelling. Only interesting thing about system is that I have been using VMware for about a week on this system. I started seeing the problem last night and VMware is NOT running. However there are a few VMware tasks executing, seem to be idle. I have no evidence that VMware is involved but that is only change to the system lately.

I am also experiencing the same problem. Im using Win2K on a pentium 3 450. I replaced my mouse (PS/2) thrice already with three different brands and all exhibit the same thing. I tried to scan it using two anti-virus software and no virus was found.
Anybody have any idea of what it is and how to fix this?
The Great!!!
