Is it possible to use an NVidia and a ATI graphics card together on the same machine?

For two cards on newer chipsets, NVidia video and NVidia main chipsets use SLI , ATI video and ATI/AMD main chipsets use Crossfire. You cannot connect them together, if they have the need for the physical wiring connection between cards, unless both cards are the same, either SLI or Crossfire, and the chipset supports the SLI or Crossfire the cards use. It's not ideal to mix them, but it should work??
BUT "NOTE that I found to my chagrin recent NVidia main chipset drivers do not get along with the ATI video chipset software......." see resonse 1 in this http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/...
