I just purchased a new pine xfx geforcefx 5200 128mb tv out divi out and vga out agp video card. I uninstalled my old drivers and card then installed the new one but after installing the new video card windows will no longer load, it gets to the xp loading screen but displays distorted lines and then it reboots. Also I have used driver cleaner and made sure my old card was completely removed.

I would try to re-install the old card and try booting to safe mode. See if you have more than one instance of video card. If more than one instance, remove all devices and re-boot. When you get to the install screens cancel the install or if that isn't possible, change display type to Std. VGA and then remove the drivers. You want XP to set the display type as Std.VGA before removing the old card. Shut down and change the cards out and boot. Should come up as 640x480 16 color. Install the drivers and software as per instructions.

I tried your directions but still no luck. I forgot to mention this in my initial message, after installing the card and the drivers and rebooting the computer will not get past the opening screen all that happens is a black screen comes up with the video card information and then the computer beeps and restarts I've been working at this for a few hours and I forgot to mention that part the only time it will get past that screen is after restarting numerous times and sometimes it recognizes the card as only be 64mb.

Try clearing the CMOS using the onboard motherboard jumper. Post again if you have trouble finding it.

I tryed clearing the CMOS using the onboard motherboard jumper but it made no change it is still stuck on the opening screen is there a chance i could have a defective card or do you have any other suggestions.

If you have a defective card your old card should still work. Did you try clearing the CMOS and then re-installing the old card? By the way, when clearing the CMOS unplug the computer from the power and push power switch before attempting to clear. XP doesn't give you a blue screen and error like win98. XP just re-boots when there is a problem. It sounds like you have a driver conflict that is preventing windows from running. Try re-istalling the old card like I decribed after clearing the CMOS. If you can't enter windows after that you need to do a system restore with the old card in place. I don't use Winxp so you will need to post a new thread on how to restore an older version of your registry, prior to your problems. After you do get your machine running with the old card. Change the display type to Std. VGA and remove the drivers for the old card, like I decribed previously. Then follow installation instructions for your card exactly.

I then install the new card and occasionally it will load to windows the first start up after being inserted in the AGP slot, then I install the new drivers for the 5200 and reboot it then displays the 5200 information on the very first screen that loads (prior to the driver install it usually says that the card is only a 64mb 5200 when it is a 128) It then beeps and hangs on a black screen for a short while then reboots and just repeats the process. I then shut down and remove the new card and insert the old and the computer works fine. If the card is defective would it even load windows once.

Before pulling the old card how are you removing the card? Using device manager?

What you need to do is go to: Control panel> Display> Settings> Advanced> Adapter> Change> Next> select the option to display a list> Next> select the option to show all hardware> select "Standard display types" - Standard display adapter (VGA). Next go to control panel> add/remove software> Remove the software for your old card and the new card also. Shutdown> Remove old card> insert new card> boot to BIOS> make sure that first video device is AGP> exit and boot to windows> when windows attempts to install the new card cancel> Install latest drivers from the website for the card.

I was previously using device manage to unistall I missused the word "exactly". I have unistalled the old video card so that there was nothing under display adapter in device manage by doing it the way you just mentioned would it make any difference.

If you do it the way I said there will be a listing under display in device manager. It will say Std. VGA adapter. That isn't the same as having none. When you remove it completely windows wants to install a new display type on bootup. what you want is to do what I said. What you were told to do before isn't working is it?

No none of the instruction including the ones that came with it have been working I'm not at my house with my computer so I will not be able to try it till later on hopefully your idea works thank you very much for your help and hopefully my next post will be to say its working.

Good luck to you. I hope you understand the concept as I instructed. Windows will label your video card as a standard VGA. You can do this with any video card except onboard chips. By doing this you are unencoumbering windows from trying to enable some type of display while trying to configure a new peice of hardware. In addition, when you remove something thru device manager it is still active until you re-boot. Therefore, you can't remove the drivers for the video because they are still in use. Hope you understand now.

Hey I think I've almost got it everything but one thing seems to be working fine. I can load windows with it and run programs and there no longer appears to be any glitches except that for some reason unknown to me it is only reading my video card as having 64mb when in fact it is 128mb this has slowed down game play as well.

Okay I tried clearing the CMOS and it then recognized all 128mb at the first screen but then it went to the same problem and wont make it past the initial screen I am presenetly using the card after some switching from new to old and so on.

Oh and its only recognizing 64mb

I would check with the manufacturer of the card about the missing memory.

Thanks for all the help. I've given up on this video card it doesnt seem to want to work with my computer, don't know if its the cpu or the card but I dont care anymore im going to get a refund and buy a better card in hopes that it will work.
