Nvidia GeForce 420M video card overheating

February 12, 2012 at 18:08:40
Specs: Windows 7
It's been some time now that my graphics card (whenever i play a game) overheats i've checked the temperature and it goes over 70 even in the menus of SC2 (works as a benchmark) i know this graphics card its not for gaming but it didnt happen before, once when i was using it alot of dust fell on the keyboar and the screen and im guessing that dust is most likely the problem as i see no artifacts and other weird stuff happening while gaming, i dont use this for gaming but it bothers me alot and i want to know if something like this has happened to any of you.

Here are the specs

Intel core i5-480M
Nvidia GeForce 420M
6 Gb of ram DDR
640 HDD

Temperatures lately
40°C idle (videocard) and 70°C+ when gaming
50°C CPU

Also the frames of the games drop ALOT lately too :) and im thinking of taking the pc apart and checking if some of that dust somehow made it to the GPU and its keeping the heat in there.

I would check for dust, see if the fans are clogged.

It's a laptop therefore it doesn't have a video card, it has an integrated graphics chip. 70C is nowhere near overheating for the GPU, 50C is nowhere near overheating for the CPU.

Notice the TJUNCTION temp for your CPU is 105C:

The max temp for the desktop version of the GT420 is also 105C:

If you're concerned, just blow the cooling vents out with compressed air & be done with it.

It seems that it was in fact my processor the one overheating going from 90° to 95+
i know the max temperature is 105° but still it's something that should not happen under any circunstancess

It seems a trait for the i5-480m. I have one of those and it regularly exceeds 70'C, in fact when doing gaming or running an anti-virus scan, it has gone up to 102'C, which is concerning... I don't know what to do about it.....
