Numbers Appearing When Typing

When I first got my HP Pavilion Laptop 2 years ago, I was able to just leave my NUM LOCK on and still have the full use of the letter part of the keyboard. This was great because I used lots of numbers when I was working and I hated using the numbers at the top of the keyboard. But a few months ago, I discovered that whenever I press the NUM LOCK key, I get numbers when I press certain letters such as k, l, m, n etc. It is such a pain to have to turn the NUM LOCK off, just to have access to the whole range of letters. Is there anyway to have the NUM LOCK key ONLY affect the number keys?

That's kinda strange. The numlock key should not affect the alpha keys. Maybe someone spilled something on the keyboard and caused the problem.

do the k, l, m, and n key have numbers printed on the keys themselves? I had a client with the same problem with a thinkpad? there was a key that turned that function on, that he hit by accident. Post the exact model number of your laptop.

Hold the Fn key down and push Num Lk and you'll be all set. The Scroll Lock is turned on.

If Rayburn's suggestion doesn't work, try Shift plus Num Lock

Thanks for all replies so far. I have tried pressing the FN key with the NUM Lock, the Shift key & Num Lock, Ctrl Key & Num Lock, ALT key & NUM Lock - you get the picture. I have also tried all kinds of combinations of the above without success. The exact model of my computer is HP Pavillion dv 9000 laptop and there are no numbers on the keys. Any other suggestions? PS. I wasn't sure how to reply to the "replies" . Hope this is okay.

If the laptop has a scroll lock key push that. Also try holding down the FN key and trying it as well.
