Comment:

I get this error message "NTLDR is missing. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart" when I try to start up. I have read the other postings but they dont seem to apply as I cant even get into windows.

Ive checked the IDE cables, the only thing I can think of is that the HD was previously a slave on another computer.

Does anyone have any ideas? Im stumped.

Okay my problem has slightly changed. I created a startup disk and can get into DOS to A:

When I try to get to C: I get the "Abort, retry, fail" message and cant access it. Same goes for the CDROM (D:)

What exactly are you trying to do? If it was a slave on another system, but you put it in your system, is it now the master? If so, did you change the master/slave jumper on the back of the drive?

it seems that "ntldr" is no longer registered in in your OS registry but most likely still present on your "root" partition. to register it again you need to start a recovery system and know what you are doing. Find out howto register NTLDR again ... (;-)

missing NTLDR's acure also when NT5x OS are changing machine architecture.

as a recovery system you could use a live-version of KNOPPIX-linux and browse your harddrive.

Good luck :-)

Thanks for your suggestions.

The HD shows up in the BIOS, which is the confusing thing. Ive checked the IDE cables a thousand times. Ive set the jumper cables to master. Ive set BIOS to boot from CD, then HD, then FLOPPY. I can boot from the floppy but it doesnt seem to find the CD or the HD.

I can get to C:> but if I type something eg. DIR I get the error that it cant be found/accessed.

It seems some virus have damaged ur NTLDR file. I had the same prob. The only way to solve it is format ur hard drive and do a clean install of Windows again and then install up-to-date anti-virus.

By the way I recommend windows 2000 or Windows XP if you are gonna buy some new windows.

Sorry, but you still haven't explained what you're trying to do & you haven't given enough info about the HDD in question.

You said it was previously a slave on another system. What was it used for? was it for storage or did it have an operating system on it? was it part of a dual boot system? did you just swap it to your system as-is? Are you certain the jumpers are set correctly? If it's a Western Digital, there are different jumpers settings for master, or master w/slave.

Im trying to boot, load the OS, anything!

"you haven't given enough info about the HDD in question. You said it was previously a slave on another system. What was it used for?"
I installed it as a slave on another system so I could install an OS on it (because I couldnt format the drive from the other computer). I then took it out and put it back in this computer. Its a Maxtor 40GB with Windows XP on it which I cant seem to access.

"did you just swap it to your system as-is?"
Yes (after changing the jumpers)

Are you certain the jumpers are set correctly?
Yes its on the very left two pins (I checked this against the specs on the HD)

Hope everyone understands what Im trying to do, any help from here on would be great.

This drive was previously a slave on another computer so I could install an OS on it. Once I did so, I removed it from the other computer and put it in another system. However when I turn the computer on, I could get to BIOS, but after that all that came up was "NTLDR missing". So now I fixed that problem by booting from a DOS start up disk which takes me to an A: prompt. Thats fine and I can browse the floppy drive but not the HD or CDROM as it cant find them and I get the "Abort, Retry, Fail" error. When I try to either boot from CDROM or HD, it doesnt register them and goes to the third boot device - the floppy. I dont know where to go from here???

So I need to boot from the floppy, so NTLDR is found, then I need to install an OS from the A: prompt unless someone can suggest why my HD and CDROM arent being recognised. They are on separate IDEs.

Sorry for the essay....

No problem dude !

Re-install windows...... NTLDR is a driver in the windows OS.... I would Format the hard drive, then re-install your operating system.

~Good Luck (all is well)

Here's what you need to do to reload your OS. Hope my comments are welcome. I have been reading these posts and maybe I can help.

Turn on your computer and tap whichever key gets you into the BIOS. Navigate over to the "boot order" section and make sure that the first listing is your CD ROM drive. Before you "save and exit", insert your Windows XP Home or Pro disk into your CD ROM drive. Now escape out of BIOS and select "Yes" to save the changes and exit.

You will now boot from the XP disk and it will first load several generic drivers.

You will have a choice to make shortly on what you want to do, Repair or install a fresh copy of Windows XP. Select Install a fresh copy. Agree to any license agreement that shows up and Windows will format your disk for you wiping out any viruses that may be on your machine (as well as everything else also, sorry) and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows. Stay close and watch for your input.

Of course when you're done, you will have to load all of your other software and possibly update your device drivers.

First things first, install a Firewall and Virus scan software, and don't forget to go to Windows Update for the patches and fixes.

Good Luck.

Thanks for your suggestion. I have fixed it by booting from a win98 disk downloaded off the net. I can get into dos now its just a matter of formatting the hd and reinstalling windows.
