Subject: Missing or invalid boot.ini

Reply:
Make a file called it boot.tmp Open it with notepad and use this.
[boot loader]
timeout=1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
save the file to a bootable floppy.

Get a boot disk http://bootdisk.com

Boot to dos. at the A:\> type:

copy boot.tmp c:\
c:
attrib -s-h-r boot.ini
rename boot.ini boot.bak
rename boot.tmp boot.ini
attrib +s+h+r

Now I can get as far as the booting to dos part, but am unsure how to type in the part from "copyboot.tmp c:\" as it says "bad command or file name"

please help

[copyboot.tmp c:\] it should be [copy boot.tmp c:/ ] put a space between copy and boot. But it will not work if the hdd file system is NTFS.
The posted boot.ini file is for partition #2 not for partiton #1.

Post the exact error message and if the hdd is NTFS or FAT32 file system.

To fix problem will likely need to boot to the recovery console.
