Too much trouble to go to the Intel site & look it up?

No, your old S478 board does NOT support Core 2 Duo processors:

"do i need to change anything else"

To run a Core 2 Duo, you'll need a new motherboard, RAM, video card & probably a new power supply. And since Windows would have to be reinstalled anyway, it would probably make sense to get an SATA hard drive.
