Comment: I'm tired of my desktop and have been looking at notebooks for about a month. I don't know a whole lot about how computers work so I'm hoping to get some advice as to which notebooks are good and which are bad. I'm a student who mostly needs the computer for research and word processing. I'll probably have the computer at home most of the time so battery life isn't a big issue. I also have about a $900 budget but the less I spend the better. Right now I'm looking at the Dell 6000 with the Pentium M processor with 1.60 gigs for about $800 and a HP R4000 with an AMD athlon 64 with 2 gigs for about $850. My father, who knows very little about computers but is also paying for half of my notebook, thinks I should buy a $500 budget pc with a celeron or sempron processor. Any suggestions? Jenn

Reply: (edit)Either of the systems your dad is suggesting would be fine for what you want to use it for.Personally, I would go with whichever has the best support and longest warranty. HP is advertising a 1 year with good support. <===Lefty=== AMD 64 3200+ 200 GB WD Geforce 5500FX 256 MB 512 MB Ram Needs more. Windows XP

Reply: (edit)I've had experience with Dell, Toshiba, and HP laptops. My friend's son just brought home his HP laptop which may be the R400 and I was impressed by its speed and features. His came with a scanner/printer and a backpack laptop case too.

Reply: (edit)Is there a big difference between the AMD Turion and Sempron? The Turion is $100 more - is it worth the extra $? P.S - Thanks! Jenn

Reply: (edit)Yes, it is worth $100. The Turion is a 64 bit CPU. Semprons are 32 bit.
