Hi I bought a power adapter and new battery for my notebook but now I have noticed that the indicator light for the charging of the battery doesn't stay on. So maybe my other battery is not dead like I thought. The light for the power of the notebook stays on(green) and is consistant but the one that indicates the battery is charging is red and goes off after a few seconds. Does this mean that there is a bad connection between power and battery?

Either there is a bad connection, or you could have bought the wrong type of battery/charger.
Compare the new charger and battery with your old ones. There may be voltage or amperage differences.
Compaq Presario 5365
AMD K6-2 450 Mhz
256 MB RAM
Windows 98 SE

Check the connector that the adapter plugs into. Try and wiggle it to see if it's broken loose from the motherboard.

Is the replacement battery exactly the same type & make that came with this notebook, or is it just a comparable brand that you didn't purchase from Compaq?

Also has to be the same technology. You can't normally use li-ion with a ni-cad system.
My guess would be the onboard charging circuit is bad.

Ok tha battery that was in the machine says Compaq Computer Corp Series PPB003A 14.4V 4.0 AHr and the one i bought says Compaq Computer Corp Series PPB004C 14.8V 4.4AHr . Also the part numbers are different.
I can't really tell of the inside of the machine is loose from the motherboard. If I wiggle then the red light activates sometimes. If I pull it in and out it activates too. There is also something odd in that the time the red light stays on is always the same. A matter of seconds.
I purchased the battery on ebay as I couldn't afford to get it directly from Compaq. They at first sent me a battery that had a different name on it and it didn't fit inside the machine. It had one extra little bit to it at the end of the battery that stopped it fitting in place. I have had a lot of good experiences with compatibles and do understand that a lot of people haven't but this buyer sent out another battery as soon as I sent a picture of the differences int he batteries.
Jefro-if the problem is what your saying is it fixable? I am going to give the laptop to my uncle who has a computer shop but as he is a pretty impatient guy it is alway better for me to do as much as possible first.

That sure sounds like it's broken loose. It's a common problem due to constant inserting and removal of the power adapter plug.
It 'could' be a simple job of resoldering it to the motherboard.

I kind of agree, if you can wiggle it and get it to work then it might be a poor or broken connection. It may be possible to use epoxy and solder to make a repair.
What do you wiggle?
Dunno why the part number doesn't cross that I have found. Not sure how a battery built the same could have a different voltage.

Ok I haven't looked inside the machine. i am just wiggling from the outside. It sounds odd though that the green light for the power generally is consistant but the red light for the battery has a mind of it's own. It behaves differently. If I say insert the adapter and both the green and red light show straight away. Within seconds the red light goes off and the green light stays on with me doing nothing. Then i wiggle and the red light goes back on for a few seconds. The green light doesn't change.
Also for some reason the red light is staying on longer today and the battery managed to charge 1% more. The new battery I got yesterday(they sent the wrong battery the first time) with the above voltage etc, was fully charged and for some reason the notebook liked that and so did the red light for it. I say that because it lit up for longer than before. I thought at first that it was just the red led light that was faulty but then when I watched the little meter that is within the linux desktop I noticed..........gee can't remember now. Will have to report on that much later today. Gotta dash!"The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso the 14th Dalai Lama

Ok well I have sent the notebook to my uncle's computer shop as I don't want to stuff up. It might be something that is beyond my abilities and it is such a good machine that I want to use.
