Not detecting hardware

My pc has suddenly decided that it does not want to detect hardware....which i had used previously, like my camera and my dsl modem. Nothing has been changed in the pc except i installed a cd-rw but then i uninstalled it to see if this would fix the problem. Could it be a fault with the usb? and if you ask me to check the BIOS please be specific, as my brain has difficulty accepting pc jargon.
