Not able to see my second hard drive

October 4, 2010 at 06:44:29
Specs: Windows XP
I have just installed a 500GB SATA hard drive for use as a backup drive.
In the BIOS I can see that the PC has detected the drive and identified it as Slave drive.

But I can't see the drive in 'my computer' to be able to backup to.

Any idea's where I have gone wrong would be much appreciated

You need to go into Disk Management and format the hard drive either as NTFS or FAT32, depending on if you will be using it with an older OS also, but I don't think you need to worry about that; I would go ahead and do NTFS. So to get there right click on MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE. Click on DISK MANAGEMENT and find your new drive in the list at the top right. Right click it and select format and follow the prompts. Then after that, you'll have to create a partition on it; either the full disk or any given amount of space less than that. To do that you should be able to right click on the drive once it has shown up at the bottom and select CREATE PARTITION. Let us know if that works for you.

My name is JRComp, and I approve this message.

You create the partition first, then format. Also with a drive that large Windows won't give you the option to format as FAT32 only NTFS
