You need to explain a bit more - how are you trying to do it? Are you using disk management from within Windows or a 3rd party program? What happens when you try to do it? Do you get error messages? etc.etc.

HP generally pre-configures the HDD with 4 primary partitions which is the max you can have - boot partition, windows partition, recovery partition, HP Tools partition. If you haven't already done so, create the full set of recovery disks - it usually takes 6-7 DVDs for Win7. Once that's done, you can dump the recovery partition. The HP Tools partition is pretty much useless so you can dump that as well. That will leave you with the hidden boot partition, windows, & unallocated space. Create a new partition from the unallocated space then format using NTFS. You can then expand the windows partition (C) into the new partition (D). It can all be done using EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition.

If you want to partition a brand new disk, after you plug on this disk you first need to go: right click My computer--manage--storage--disk management and then it will automatically popup the window ask you to initialize this disk to MBR or GPT, if the disk is smaller than 2TB, initialize to MBR.

Then you could use AOMEI Partition Assistant freeware to partition this drive easily
