Hi

Was wondering if anyone could help me with this query.

I am thinking of building a media center pc for the front room.

I am wanting to know if there is any kind of coverter or something that will let me connect normal speaker cable to my audio out 3.5mm Jack on the sound card. so i can link up speakers without having a Hi-Fi there.

cheers

i bought a mini-plug(male) to rca(female - left and right) adapter from Radio Shack. make sure it is stereo. other stores may have this adapter too. then use an rca plug stereo patch cable of whatever length you need. plug to an audio in source of the amplifier.

You may be able to connect them but chances are it won't work. Most sound cards these days only have a pre-amp out level. The output isn't strong enough to drive speakers.

Quite right. Plug anything bigger than a tiny 3 watt speaker or a pair of headphones into the speaker socket and you will have difficulty hearing anything. Speakers that are designed for sound cards have built in amplifiers designed for the purpose.

You really do need an hi-fi amplifier if you are going to get decent sound quality. If you are going to connect the output from sound card into a hi-fi amplifier then you should use the line out socket which is designed for plugging into the line in socket on a hi-fi amplifier.

Even though the output from the speaker socket is low, it is likely to be to high for the line in socket on an amplifier and will lead to distortion.

You could do a search for a sound card with speaker level output, but they are not as easy to find as cards with line level output.

Sorry, I do not check for private messages

I did basically the same as you are doing, but I ended up just taking a dog chewed up rca and old pair of headphones, and putting the wires together with a little electrical tape, but these adapters probably work better.

You might find this useful as well. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812149117

Hope that helps!
