The first HD on my new Dimension 3100 sounded like an old tractor.

They sent another HD, but it too is noisy, I can hear it crunching away.

I've had 5 PCs and have NEVER had any noise, I don't understand how a new PC in 2006 can be so noisy.

Is this normal with this model, or Dell, or new HDs?

I've had Dimensions before, without this.

Many thanks

Hard drives vary in the noise factor. If both of the drives sound the same, it's probably a characteristic of that particular make and model.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

If it sounds like a tractor - it's probably a maxtor ;-)

Someone posted this a few days ago, you can download it and it will get you the details of the HDD and more. You can post back those details.

haha, that info isnt really that helpfull. We need a brand. I wouldent worry too much I were you, my freind recently baught a new Compaq and his hard drive was surprisingly loud too..

"If it sounds like a tractor - it's probably a maxtor ;-)" I recently baught a seagate 200Gb SATA drive and its actual storage space is smaller than my 200Gb SATA Maxtor and its is also miles louder.. maby its not true for all maxtors.. I find Hitachi drives to be pretty noisy when they get working but this Seagate is louder, I dont know why I didnt just buy another WD.

Anyhoo, If you want a quiet hard drive Western Digital hard drives are very quiet and my favourite brand of HDD..

Yeah, Hitachi's can be pretty loud. Dont worry too much. If you want to check if its healthy, download speedfan, install it, run it and go to the SMART tab, then click perform in-depth online anlysis. It will tell ya if its all good.
