Comment:

so i just transferred my hardware into a new case, and when i go to turn it on, the following happens

1) no video...
2) regular short beep like it usually does at POST
3) waits a few seconds, and then does two more short beeps in rapid succession. and then proceeds to do absolutely nothing. still no video.

i believe my motherboard (asus P5K SE) uses an AMI bios, but none of the resources i've found say anything specific about a short beep followed by two more short beeps a few seconds later.

any idea what the problem is? i've tried disconnecting all hardware besides just the power supply (tried alternate, same thing), motherboard, CPU, video card, and the memory (tried one stick at a time, same thing), and this still happens, even with the motherboard out of the case...

Dave

1 long = POST has passed all tests.

1 long, 2 short = Failure in video system.

(apparently the 1st beep is considered a long beep)

Make sure your card is fully seated in it's slot & if it requires a PCIe plug, that it's connected.

ATX mboards are always powered in some places even when the computer is not running, as long as live AC is being supplied to the PS, the PS is on, and the PS is connected to the mboard.
Did you have the AC power to the PS disconnected (or the switch on the PS turned off it it has one) at all times when you were fiddling with connections, components, and cards inside your case?

Your beep pattern sounds like a video problem. If it were a ram problem, usually whatever pattern it has is continuous.
The beep pattern for no ram or a ram problem is usually the same.
If you remove the AC power to your PS, remove all your ram, restore the AC power, and try to boot, you will probably hear the beep pattern for that before you hear one for a video problem.

If you did not have the AC power to the PS off at all times, it is easy to damage something, especially an AGP or PCI-E video card if you plug it in or unplug it while the mboard is powered.

Similarly, if you did not install the screw that holds down the video card before you plugged a monitor into it, it is easy for the card to move in it's slot enough when you do that for it to be damaged when the mboard is powered, whether the computer is running at the time or not.

If you did that properly.....

Make sure there is no metal mounting post installed in the wrong place underneath the mboard - if you take off both sides of the case you can usually see whether that's your situation or not - if not you'll need to remove the mboard to check for that.
