My son's K7S5A W2K system just developed "dead" USB ports. The DevMan shows "!" for these devices and error 28 - they just can not be enabled even if uninstall/install driver is done. I plugged a USB mouse dongle and I can see the LED flash but the OS will not "see" the mouse. Same for the KB. PS2 connected mouse/KB are OK. Anyone have a clue?

No kidding...My ECS K7SEMv3 had the PS/2 mouse port die in it...perhaps quality issues with the company? Mine was a similar board with an integrated Duron.

I worked around this by buying a different mouse...and you can buy a PCI-USB adapter for under $15. If it's still under warranty, try that route...

Check in cmos/bios setup. Sometimes the ports can be enabled/disabled there.

Thanks for the input guys. Ths BIOS setting shows "enabled". It looks like my son's karma did it again - the ports are smoked. I cabled up an old IDE disk to the MoBo with W98 on it and ran a boot - the ports are dead. I am hopeful that a PCI adapter with USB ports goes over a different route to the CPU - that looks like my only chance now.
Many thanks and regards
