Hey,

My computer restarted itself and froze on the Advent startup screen the other day.. Then on restarting a number of times it wouldn't get to loading Windows entirely before restarting itself again... so I opened it up and it was caked in dust, and I thought the CPU fan might not have been working properly because it was so dusty and so the computer may have been resetting itself when the fan didn't work to avoid overheating... so I cleaned it up and it worked Ok for one boot-up..

Next day it won't boot again, and got the XP loading screen before freezing.. now on startup I get power but no screen or startup or BIOS or anything, just the CPU fan and power to drives and CD/DVD drives and power on light (which flashes twice as though attempting to start up before staying on with the fan)..

I thought it may be a RAM problem because since the problem started it has booted up twice, and frozen on other attempts ..now I get nothing though..

I've removed and put in the RAM and all cards/removable slots, and made sure everything is plugged in Ok, but still nothing..

Should I buy some new RAM and try that? I also do a lot of memory intensive web development work and thought this may have caused the memory issues in the first place? Any help would be really welcome,

Thank you!

It's probably not the RAM, but you can try removing it. You should get error beeps when there's no RAM installed. If it fails the same way, you can look for something else. 'Probably' the motherboard/CPU or power supply.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

Thanks for your reply..

What kind of checks can I do to try and work out which component is causing the problem?

Thanks
