Hi. Can anyone help? My dad has a LG computer running Windows XP. He was having problems getting onto internet and a friend checked all settings etc were correct and as a last resort he tried taking a network card out of an old computer and putting that one in. The internet worked straight away so it solved that problem but now he has no sound. There was sound on the computer before. I'm not very technically minded and so don't know if the sound problem could be because of the network card that is now in the computer? Don't really want to remove this network card as it has solved the internet problem. I have checked all volume and mute settings and they are correct. Are sound cards usually part of the network cards and could it be that this network card doesn't have one? Any suggestions much appreciated

The initial problem could have had many causes, but the most common ones are somone re-installed Windows and Windows did not have built in drivers for the network adapter, or somone installed drivers for the wrong network adapter chip or chipset (and Windows did not have built in drivers for the network adapter). In that case, you need to determine what network adapter the computer has, and find, download, and install the right drivers for the network adapter. Eg. for a brand name system those drivers are in the software downloads for the model at the brand name's web site.
Another common problem when you using network cables is the connector on the ends is not all the way into the network port - the end connector has a clip that locks it into the port, but that can get broken.
If you cure that problem, you don't need the separate network card in a slot.
......The network adapter card worked straight off because Windows already had the necessary drivers for it built into it.
Did someone install the network card in the last PCI slot?
Don't install any PCI card other than a PCI video card in the PCI slot on the end closest to the middle of the mboard - that slot is forced to share it's IRQ with the video, and if you install any card other than a PCI video card in that slot you are likely to have problems.
E.g. the sound chip or chipset is probably built into the mboard - installing a network card in that last PCI slot may disable the sound. If that doesn't help, try installing the network card in a different PCI slot - each slot can have different preferences regarding which IRQ it tries to use first.

... go to "start" run (type) devmgmt.msc [press enter]
... do you see any yellow markers? ...if not...next
... go to "start" run (type) mmsys.cpl [press enter]
... next click Audio (tab) ...under Sound playback... default device
... try to click that to see if it will toggle to another device
