I'm going to a friend's house to fix his computer. Here is the situation. The computer works and he can get into windows with no problem. But, he has no sound, cd-rom doesn't work, usb doesn't work.

Any hints to what could be going on? My guess is the MOBO failing or maybe the power supply. Thanks.

More information would be helpful.

You could get this if he didn't have MOBO chipset drivers. This might happen if they somehow became corrupted or weren't installed after the OS installation.

His computer was working fine, then one day he turned it on and no sound, no cd-rom... So, they were once installed. Maybe he got a virus?

Or maybe they got corrupted some other way.

See if reinstalling them resolves the problem. Scanning for a virus is always a good idea.

First place I would go is into Device Manager to see what status it shows for each of the problem devices. Definitely scan for/remove virus's and spyware. Use a registry cleaner (WinDoctor if he has Norton SystemWorks installed, if not Abexo Free.) Then reinstall/update device drivers (if things are not already working correctly.)
