No Sound from Toshiba Satellite

Specs: Windows XP-Pro w/service pak 3
This is a 2008 model P100 with Vista system. Since the re-installation process a month ago there has been no sound. This includes the startup and regular system sounds and of course the DVD. (nothing). It does indicate that the current drivers are updated and operational. I believe it is Conextant High Definition Smart Audio. The destop icon shows the volume control is functional.I think there is a small rotary volume control at the front of the panel but I must be stupid if there is an invisible on-off switch (or whatever). Any advice? thanks.

Larry. It is indeed a Vista system as configured on the OEM (Toshiba) discs. I did not notice the sub-heading so I now suspect I am on the wrong page. I was prompted to post the question but I suppose it was done this way because the prompt directive 'assumed' I was still dealing with an XP issue (as my latest posting was). I will delete it if I am expected to otherwise someone can answer me here. After-all isn't Vista basically an improved upon (at least according to Microsoft) version of the XP Service-Pak 3? thanks.

Hello again and hope everyone's 2012 is going well. I am still waiting for some positive responses. Is anyone on here?? If so, what is the next logical approach - - assuming my driver is updated and installed? Would one of the (3) Toshiba discs offer a solution? thanks. Oh, and one more time, this is indeed a Vista O.S.
