I have a Compaq Presario desktop computer model SR1720NX. Its about a year old and sound has been working fine before this. I obtained a second hard drive and proceeded to put it in. When I got the front panel off I discovered that underneath it had front audio jacks and cables to the motherboard which were blocking the second hard drive space. I was only using the rear audio jacks so I removed it. I got the new hard drive in. When I restarted the computer it came up but had no sound. What could be wrong?

Have you tried reconnecting the cable(s) to the front audio sockets, to see if sound is restored.
Sometimes, within a socket there is a connection between one pin and another that is made until a plug is inserted. If there is more than two wires, this is an indication of just such a connection.
e.g. sound is fed to the front, but if no plug inserted, is fed on to the back.
When plug inserted(in front) connection to back is broken and sound comes out through plug.
I do not know your pc, but the above may explain your problem.
Good Luck - Keep us posted

yes I have tried reconnecting the cables. It is very difficult to do because the header pins to which the cables connect are in a tight corner of the pc. Plus I do not remember to which header the cables connect. I think I got one cable reconnected but still no sound.
