No sound coming from speakers

Specs: Windows XP, .
As in previous post - my dads inherited an old Sony Vaio laptop. It didnt have sound when he got it - i thought it might be a drivers problem, so when i reinstalled windows - i made sure all the drivers went back on.
Theres still no sound coming from it at all. If i play something in Windows media player - it looks like its playing but no sound comes out.

All the drivers look fine - no conflicts, all my sound settings are correct.

I thought maybe the model didnt have speakers at all.. but the online description of this model says it has inbuilt stereo speakers... I dont know if this is linked - but there is no headphones port. There is a hole there.. but theres no jack...

any help appreciated

This is a tough one. If it looks like it's playing in media player, you have drivers installed. If you don't see any conflict marked in device manager, and you have all the volume levers raised in master Volume including all the mute boxes unchecked; then hardware is the best bet on the issue. Not being able to connect headphones or external speakers to the headphone jack is a big problem and could only mean 1 thing. You have to go inside.

Sounds like a USB sound card. Yes, you can go with that.
I would also recommend not going inside a Sony Vaio if you don't have experience working inside laptops, because their designs are more complicated than all other brands I've worked on.
