It's normal for the speakers to be cut out when inserting headphones.

After the response above I am looking at the question differently.

kieran

When you plug in headphones do yyou hear sound from the headphones? If that is the case then your laptop is working as it should. What sense would it make to have the speakers still going when using headphones. Headphones are designed for private listening.

If your headset has a volume control on it then check it. If you aren't getting any sound from them.

Check the advanced settings for sound to see if the headphone settings are muted.

all i can think is that the headphone socket on my laptop must be broken or something??
