Hi guys , Im spending a couple days at my mums and she has a problem with her sound. I have tried this so far . My mum reinstalled windows 98 SE . Problem was no sound . I downloaded Everest for her and i looked under Multimedia then PCI/PNP Audio . The following card was found . Intel 82801AA I/O Controller Hub - AC'97 Audio Adapter [B-1]. I looked in drivers guide found the following driver and installed it http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=130168
The file name of the driver in drivers guide if u click the link is called Intel82801AAControllerAC97Driv erforwin98.exe
sounds like the driver to me but after installing it it didn't work .
Now ive looked in Control panel . system . Then device manager tab and there are a few yellow explanation point's in there . they are as followsCD-ROM controllers
Mitsumi CD-ROM Controller with Double Speed Drive.(yellow explanation)Other devices
PCI Multimedia Audio Device (yellow explanation)
Unknown Device (yellow explanation)please help ??

Try un-installing both the yellow explanation marked devices and reboot. Then it should find your Sound card while booting. If not install those drivers again and see what happens. Does the sound card show up in Device manager? There is a chance it is installed but the sound is muted. Open the Sound control panel if it shows up.

Windows XP

i uninstalled both explanation points and they reinstalled them again on startup . it didn't work . just the same problem . i tried reinstalling the driver i from driversguide again . with the and without the 2 yellow explanation drivers installed and that didnt work either .
Now i looked in device manager sound card . im asuming u meant to look under the sound control pannel in there but there is nothing there that shows it installed . Im not sure if i followed your directions there lefty but i think i did .
Just one more thing when on everest Intel82801AAControllerAC97Driv erforwin98.exe
came up under summary. It gave me the option by clicking on it and sending me to
(A: product information)http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/index.htm?iid=HPAGE+header_products_chipsets&
(B: Driver download)http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-009244.htm
Maybe the driver download has the one i need or some helpfull information in product info . If not maybe you have another idea for me . thank you so much for helping me out ?

when i said under summary on everest . i meant it was the same as multimedia PCI\PNP Audio options .82801AA I/O Controller Hub - AC'97 Audio Adapter [B-1]. LOL i incorrecty supplied its description info . sorry mate .

Hello:
1)Are you sure you downloaded the Correct driver for your sound
2)Did you install the Motherboard driver after Reinstalling win98Se
3) is the motherboard driver has any driver for your Sound Card
4) Is your Sound card integrated into your Mobo
If not , have you tried Switching The Card From a Slot to another inside your Computer
5) Have your Removed your Sound from the device manager & then Try installing it Manually
Please let Us know ...

As poweraid stated, you will need to install the drivers from the motherboard disk. It has the integrated drivers for your sound and graphics if it is on-board as well.

Yeah, it's probably best to use the sound drivers provided by the motherboard manufacturer. AC97 setup needs different drivers for different boards.
It's odd a cdrom controller is showing there. Open the case and check to see if the cdrom is a standard IDE connected to the motherboard IDE ports. If so, you should be able to remove the cdrom controller card.

OK guys . I have some information . Don't know how usefull it is but when i start looking inside the pc itself my knowledge isn't very good . i installed the Intel82801AAControllerAC97Driv erforwin98.exe
finally after right clicking PCI Multimedia Audio Device. selcecting properties and update driver . then selecting the destination to Intel82801 which was on desktop where i saved it. it also needed the assistance of te windows 98 SE CD . Now after it installed and rebooted the PCI Multimedia Audio driver yellow explanation mark dissapered. but no sound . i checked device manager and other devices has PCI Communication with yellow explanation and Unkown device with yellow explanation . also under Sound,Video and game controllers theres a yellow explanation next to Crystal WDM Audio Codec now . the cd explanation mark has gone now as well so i guess thats good . Sounds to me i may have installed the wrong A7 driver and it's not working liike u said Dave about needing the exact driver?

well thats it . i dont know what to do . i have tried nearly every driver from msi.com and none of them work . i just dont know what the problem is . maybe bonzi u can tell me where to look on everest but i just dont know anymore . ive spent what . 20 hrs on this thing for the past 3 days and i have no idea . It's funny . and i downloaded about 5 drivers . only five or so available for windows 98 SE from msi.com . which is the manufacturer for the motherboard . amen for trying . if anyone has any ideas im yearning for em . lol .... peace out .

The drivers on the manufacturer's site should work. You may need to uninstall any previous attempts for the correct one to work.

Hi ravndall5,
I had exactly the same problem and the answer was really simple. Open Media Player, click 'help' at the top, click 'check for player updates', and bingo... the computer sound came on like magic. Same thing worked for someone else I know too. Cheers.
