I just got back from visiting my dad yesterday in Puerto Rico. When I left 5 weeks ago it was working fine. Now when I got back today I tried to turn on my computer but nothing happened. Not even a power light or a fan. And i believe it is my power supply that is making a high pitched squeal/noise. I built this computer myself about a year ago. I am a novice but know enough to repair most problems. I cleaned off the dust and i checked al connections related to power and i even air dusted the power supply fan. Could someone please tell me what could possible be wrong with my machine?

The PSU and mother board both have mechanisms to prevent bootup/powerup on a voltage fault of any kind. To be certain that the power supply is at fault you should do the following.Remove all peripheral cards (including video) and all hard drive connections including the power (Molex) connectors leading to them. The only things that should be connected are the power connector to the mother board and the led/switch cables from the chassis front end to the mother board and all fan connectors. This will eliminate all possible interference from external devices.
Turn the power on and watch for the power supply fan to be moving. If it moves and continues without issue then the PSU and mother board are both ok and one of the items I had you disconnect above are the culprit. If the fan does not spin (or spins for a brief moment only) then it is most likely the PSU (although this does not completely eliminate the mother board) so verify this by trying a known good PSU. If the new PSU works as expected then the old PSU is the problem. If it doesn't then the mother board is the issue or the RAM/CPU are bad. Exchange the RAM and CPU one at a time and watch for the same things. If everything is the same regardless then the mother board is definitively the issue.
