No power to laptop HDD installed in desktop

Specs: Windows XP
laptop hd in desktop install help . . ok so i went to frys and got an addaptor to install laptop hd in my desktop . then got home looked at the easy instuctions and noticed that the power hook up the addaptor is part of the ribon hookup . checked info. again and its conected proper so i installed it and no power to hd . when starting eerror says no hd installed . what am i doing wrong ?

Buy a 2.5-inch external hard drive enclosure instead. Install your laptop drive into the enclosure, then plug the enclosure into a USB port and into a mains socket.
