Hi, just put together my comp. I have asus A8N SLI motherboard with AMD 939 3000 cpu.
Not installing floppy drive, installing dvd-rom and writer. Sata drives and dual channel memory, 1 gig pc3200. Only installing xfx 6600le sli ready video card.

I'm a novice, building my second comp.

1. Does it matter if my case doesn't have the speaker plugs that attach to the motherboard (figure its for the beeps during post?)

2. Here's the my main question. I got everything plugged in like i think i should. I see the onboard led light is on when i plug in the power to my Ultra 550 watt supply. But nothing runs. I figure i try it first by trying to pop open the dvd tray, nothing... No fans turn on.

The 20 pin to 24 pin motherboard is plugged, the square 4 pin is also plugged in.

How do i know if it is the motherboard or the powersupply since i see the standby green light on the mother board. I dont' think i fried the motherboard. Any clues?

Thanks all

It sounds like you may have gotten a bad PSU.

Rule # 1 - always benchtest a board before installing it in the case! Now you have no idea what's causing the problem. Strip down to the bare minimum & see if you can boot & access the BIOS.

BTW, I suggest you reconsider your decision to go without a floppy. They're cheap & you'll eventually find a need...such as updating the BIOS or running Memtest86.

Actually i do have the floppy, it was just too crowded. I regret going with Ultra power supply. The cords are so hard to bend may have to go with the traditional supply unit.

Ok, bare mininum?

1. CPU
2. Video card
3. Power supply
4. Motherboard
5. Is memory needed?

Anything else I missing or should take away? I'll try this...Let u know how it goes. tks

Of course you must using a cpu that is actually supported by your mboard, and it's present bios version. Check the mboard website to make sure. If the cpu requires a newer bios version that is installed on the mboard, you have to install a cpu it does support first, flash the bios, then install your cpu.

Check your mboard manual to see whether you need to plug in another connector from the PS into the mboard, besides the ones in the 24 pin connector.

It would be wise to also connect a keyboard.

You must have memory installed to boot the computer.

You have plenty of memory.
Make sure it is in the right slot(s).
However, the memory module(s) may not be compatible with your mboard - in some cases the mboard will not boot with it in if that is the case.
See this, particularly response 12:

You should check that out before assuming the PS or cpu or mboard are no good.

Well, didn't check the ram to see if compatible. I guess that may be it since mboard doesn't boot up at all, i do see the standby light so i assume there is power going through it.

thank, let u know
