Solved No power to Dell Optiplex SX270

August 4, 2014 at 20:55:01
Specs: Windows 7
I was given a desktop, but it does not power on. The light on the transformer box if off and there is no indication of power at all. The plug portion of the cable works fine to power my monitor, so I figured the transformer box was at fault since the light remained off. I bought a new one and still have no power at all. Any ideas?

By 'transformer box' I assume you mean power supply. Are you sure the one you bought is compatible and that everything is connected properly?

There should be a group of wires going from the front panel to the motherboard. They'll include the wires for the power switch, power LED and hard drive LED. Are those connected, at least the power switch connector?

You may need to temporarily remove any add-on cards and disconnect the drives. (Do that with the power cord removed) If it then comes on and shows the posting screen then one of the disconnected items must be at fault.

Don't forget to preorder your Hatch green chili for this fall. Many vendors ship world-wide.

Realize also that the SX270 was one of the machines (most notoriously) that Dell produced with bad capacitors. Severe enough, that problem could also appear to be a P/S failure:,281...
