Hi I was surfing the net and then all of a sudden my machine turned off. I must admit there was a noise coming from the machine for nearly 2 days but i thought it was the fan on the video card. Now in hindsite it is what turned the machine off. Now the machine doesn't turn back on at all. There is only the green light on the of the machine. Somehow also the usb connected scanner seems to have died. Is that possible? Anyway would this mean that the power supply is dead and maybe the MB? The fan in the power supply is not turning. There are no sounds coming from anything. The machine seems to be fully dead.

i have known them to show the LED light as on when it is the Power Supply Unit that has failed and when it is the motherboard that has failed. remove all power supply cables to drives and motherboard. On the largest multipin plug there should be a green wire with a black one on each side.use a piece of wire / unfolded bare metal paper clip or similar, bridge the green one with one of the black ones. when connected does the power supply unit fan come on?
I am wondering if the noise was the PSU fan which was failing and now the PSU has failed. Sometimes (not always) when PSU fails it ruins the mobo also. As with a lot of problems, substituting with new part is the only sure way of finding which part is faulty.

The noise may also have been the cpu cooling fan. The cpu may have been overheating, although the computer should probably have turned back on after being off for awhile. You could also try cleaning the cpu fan-don't use a vacuum cleaner. It wouldn't hurt to clean the fan on the video card as well. It seems more likely to be the psu and/or mobo.

Hi cliffpage I am not sure how to do that so I won't risk doing myself an injury. Ok well I think I will send the machine off to my uncle but will wait a couple of days because I might score a power supply tomorrow. My uncle has a computer shop but he is far away and I have to get the other uncle to take the machine there. Also new parts are expensive and I am lucky to score a lot of second hand parts for free. Even whole systems. We have a good recycling community around my area.

kx5m2g-yep I cleaned everything today and tried again but still nothing. I use a type of brush and I have always found it effective compared to vacuuming. The little vacuum cleaners don't seem to do much and I heard they can cause damage.

Well i tried pulling everything off the mobo and seeing what happens but the power supply is still not making any noise so I will send the pc off to my uncle....will be sad to see it go. I tried to score a power supply yesterday but I know I wouldn't get anything powerful enough that is free. Hope it is not the mobo and psu but ah well s--- happens.
