Amd Athlon 64 3800+ processor (

Specs: Windows XP
I just attempted to upgrade the CPU on my GA-K8NMF-9 M/B. With the new CPU installed (+paste and heatsink/fan) I hit the power button. The CPU fan started. I hit the power button and shut it down, then connected the video cable to the monitor so I could watch the POST. This time, when I hit the power button, the CPU fan did not start. Nothing seemed to work so I put the old CPU back in. It works fine.

Did I do something to fry this CPU?

thanks for any help.

Did you check the CPU support list to make sure the CPU you bought is compatible? Do you have the most recent BIOS? As for the paste, did you put a small dab in the center of the CPU or did you lay on a glob & spread it around like cake frosting?

Thanks for the reply. I just noticed that the CPU I received is not what was advertised (I purchased it on eBay).

What was advertised was a Athlon 3800 Venice processor, but what I got was an Athlon 3800 Clawhammer. And yes, indeed, it is not listed on the compatibility list for this motherboard.

I confess I'm a little surprised that it doesn't appear on the compatibility list. Anyway, I guess that explains it.

As for the paste, it was a small dab in the centre of the cpu. There seems to be a good case for this technique resulting in fewer air bubbles.
