|My PC (Emachine T2483) does not boot. All I hear is the CPU fan spinning at very high speed, no beeps from the BIOS (Phoenix), and nothing on the screen. |
The weird thing is that both optical drives will not open when I press the button, even though they are receiving plenty of power (I checked the leads with my volt meter). I thought the problem was with the 250W PS, so I replaced it with a new 300W, but no change. When I connect the optical drive to a power lead in my other PC, it works just fine and the drive opens. Is this PC haunted??
The problems began a few days after I increased the RAM from 256 to 768 with an extra 512MB stick. After the RAM changeout the PC worked fine and showed the RAM, but a few days later it would only boot intermittently and then it wouldn't boot to Windows, but the screen would come on and I was able to select safe mode (safe mode boot did not work though). Now the PC is completetly dead and silent except for the fan and HDD spinning - only a black screen.
I tried installing an old AGP video card to see if that's the problem, but not. Also I removed the new RAM and left the old one and also swapped out positions including trying to boot without RAM. Tried floppy booting it and disconnecting everything and removing the modem. I also cleared the BIOS by removing the jumper and later the battery as well (I replaced the jumper and battery now).
Do you think the motherboard or CPU is fried?
