OS: Win98
CPU/Ram: Athlon 2000+/256DDR RAM
Comment:

My PC froze whilst using it. I hit the reset switch and it has failed to boot since. There are no beeps, and no video output most of the time. On the occasions that there is video output to the monitor, it only gets this far:
................................
GA-7DXE F4
Check System Health OK
Main Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 1250MHz
<CPUID: 0662>
..................................

It only gets as far as the above. I should mention that when there is video output to the monitor there is a single beep given. There are no keyboard lights on.

Usually, after the <CPUID> line, there is a memory check, so I replaced the RAM with a new module, but that didn't cure it.

I have a separate video card. I don't know whether to replace the motherboard or video card.

Can anyone help or advise.

Cheers

Adi

take the memory out completely and see if you get beeps, if so then i'd guess its another component
if not i'd say it's motherboard or processor

...someplace to start

Try to reset the BIOS by removing the MOBO battery for a while and replacing it or by jumper if this MOBO has one for this purpose.

When the memory is removed, there is a continuous beeping.

Badboy:
I will try the BIOS reset and reply back.

Make sure that your CPU fan is running at full speed.
Also check the power supply fan while you're at it.

i would take all the cards out, modem sound video unplug hard drives, cables from back of computer, etc
so you have processor memory, power supply
you should get video card beep, normal
then add that back parts one at a time until you find the problem or your computer is working

but definately try badboys suggestion first

I tried the removing the battery on the mobo, left it out for about 3 minutes (is that long enough?), replaced it but still no good.

CPU and PSU fans are working fine. There is also a fan on the video card which appears to be running at the required speed.

I will try unplugging the devices and report back.

Cheers,

Adi

OK, I unplugged everything from the mobo as suggested, leaving just the RAM.

I got mixed results. I hit the reset button twice, first time got a long continuous beep, hit it the second time and got no beeps.

I re-inserted the video card, and got video output to the monitor, but it only got as far before (to the <CPUID> line). Press the reset button again but no video output that time.

Anymore ideas guys?

Cheers so far,

Adi

look for a setting in the cmos "bios update" and set it to disabled
or try to update the bios on the motherboard, download that from the manufacturers website

it's starting to sound like a motherboard or processor issue to me, especially the erratic behavior

The problem is, it won't even let me hit Del to enter the BIOS setup!

I was starting to think the same: mobo or cpu.... Just need to take the gamble as to which one needs replacing...

Leave the battery out for at least 30-60 minutes with the computer unplugged to try to reset the BIOS.

Sorry that didn't work.

I wonder if your CPU is bad since that seems to be where it hangs when you go through POST.

I'm not sure if your still having probs, but I had a similar problem. Stopped after printing CPU ID. The result was as Badboy said. CPU fried.
