No poiwer to any drive with ribbon connected

May 31, 2009 at 07:24:01
Specs: Windows XP
None of my drives get power while the ribbon cablesare connected. For example, my hard drive does not spin until I unplug the ribbon cable from it. Then I hear it spin. And, the drawer on my cd drive will not open unless I unplug the ribbon cable, too.

Have you made any changes that may have caused this problem? It sounds like either you have the master/slave jumpers set wrong or you have the ribbon cable plugged in upside-down. The red stripe goes to the # 1 pin.

No, everything is connected properly. I have been working on pc's for quite a while now. I just never saw anything like this. I always have the red stripe on pin 1. I was wondering if anyone had ever experienced anything like this before.

Check the Drives, motherboard receptacles and the ribbon Cables for signs of bent pins. Try a different ribon cable.

There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

I have tried a different hard drive, with the same result. I know it is not the ribbon cables or motherboard receptacles because the same exacty thing happens on both the cd rom and hard drive. The cd drive door will not open (no pwer) until I disconnect the ribbon cable from it. The hard drive will not spin unless I remove the ribbon cable from it too.

I appreciate the help although I am at quit a loss on this one.
