Hi all,
Just built a new computer and have got 2 questions. i didnt bother with a floppy as i never use them now. When I start up the computer stops at POST and says Floppy Error (40), if I then hit F1 it continues with no probs.
Presumbably it is telling me theres no floppy, how can i disable it checking?. I already tried changing the start up order to CD Rom first then HDD and HDD again it didnt work.
The second one is possibly more serious. I have a MSI K7N2 Delta mobo with an XP2800 and 512mb of generic ram (3200).
Apparently if you put two sticks of ram in slot 1 and 3 you get double data rate or something, I did this and when I first booted got a series of bios beeps indicating a memory problem.
First thoughts were should have gone for Crucial!, but when I took one stick out and left one in mumber 1 dimm it booted fine (apart from floppy prob). I just presumed one stick of ram was faulty.
Then I put both sticks in dimm 1 and 2 and it works fine.
Is there something I have to do/enable to get it to work in 1 and 3?, or is it a mobo fault on dimm 3 do you think?. Cheers Ming

1. On the bios screen where you set hard drive properties and time and date etc. This screen is where you say what floppy you have (if any)
2. You should look for the manual for the mobo, you may have some rubbish information.

I agree with Sydney. Putting RAM modules in slots 1 and 3 is never going to work. Finding a memory module in slot 3, the BIOS also expects to find something in slot 2. There wasn't but assumed there was and reported it as bad and gave you the errors. Memory slots are alway filled in numerical order which is usually 0,1,2 not 1,2,3.

Controller 2 controls slot 3 only. Stick in slots 1 and 2 will work but will not give dual-channel performance since they are both controlled by the same controller. To get the advantage of dual-channel you must either have RAM in slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 3.
The biggest problem with dual-channel nForce2 boards is that they are very picky about what RAM you use. Some people have used cheap memory while others have to use mached sets of expensive RAM such as Corsair. When I bought my ASUS A7N8X Deluxe over a year ago this was a real problem. I played it safe and bought 2x512MB Corsair XMS PC2700. For me slots 2 and 3 worked best. Your solution? Better memory? Matched sets? Search the nets and other forums. Maybe someone with the same board can recommend the best RAM.

Thanks all,
Sorted the floppy thing and your probably right about the decent ram. For now Im gonna leave it as its rock solid with 512mb in dimm 1 and 2 and scoring 11000 in 3d mark 2001 se, i'm happy!. Cheers Ming
