no bootable device missing os

Specs: Windows xp
Hey, I am not tuned in on computers and really need some help.

I cant afford a proffessional to fix my computer anymore,

When comp starts up it says' missing os, no bootable device found, on other occasions it will display ' disk read error occured'' and at other times it has displayed, 'MBA error,

regardless of this, there have been times my comp has worked for a week and then its gone down like this again. Another thing worth mentioning is '' missing or corrupt file ' windowsroot/system32/hal.dll.

I dont want to damage my computer any further, no some advice would be muchly appreciated if any one could help

Sounds very much like your harddrive is failing. Is this a brandname system. Do you have an operating system instal disk? Have you made backups of your important files?
