Hello,
I have a pc that does not have a video signal. When I turn it on, it doesn't beep and there is no video signal. If I unplug the monitor it says, No video signal detected, when I connect it, it goes black. The monitor led turns green when turned on, then goes amber. It has an onboard video card so I installed a seperate video card, same problem. I replaced the ram with some ram from a working computer, same problem. I have removed extra cards that are installed, just in case they were causing a problem and nothing. I also disconnected all drives and just left the hd connected and samething happens. I even swapped the hd, just to rule out everything and nothing. I removed the onboard battery to clear the memory... nothing. Fan is working, I hear the hard drive spinning, the leds in front of the pc are running, but I get no beep or video signal.

ANY help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Ray

The monitor is OK, it is either you've got a defective video card, motherboard or ram.

If you know what you are doing, you can easily narrow it down to one of those, especially since you got spares all around you.

What happened between the last time it worked OK and the first time it didn't?

Hello and thanks to both of you for answering.

Sabertooth: "The monitor is OK, it is either you've got a defective video card, motherboard or ram."

Ok, I figured the same thing, but I have installed both a good video card and good ram that is working on another computer. Could it be anything else, other than the motherboard?

And DAVEINCAPS, actually nothing happened. Just shut it off one night, next day turned it on... fan turned on, hard drive was spinning, leds on front of the pc lit up, but no video signal.

I have jiggled, removed, replaced all the cards I could move and nothing.

I just want to try everything so I don't have to replace the motherboard, but if that's the only thing it could be, well then I'll just have to do it.

If you guys can guide me more, I would be very greatful.
Thanks
Ray

If you haven't already tried this, remove all cards except video and disconnect all drives. Then see if it'll at least give a posting screen.

Is the cpu fan spinning OK?

You may want to jump the 'clear cmos' jumper, power up for a second, power down and put the jumper back in the 'standby' position.

Howdy DAVEINCAPS, Thanks again for your continued help. After trying out the suggestions you guys gave here, I searched on the internet for some other solutions. In one place I found it said to remove the cpu and the ram and make sure they were seated in properly. I had already done that to the ram, so the cpu was the next thing. I managed to get the stupid heatsink off, which was glued on, then I notice that the cpu was not attached very firmly in place. I lifted the lever, looked at the pins to make sure they weren't bent, placed it back in, pushed the lever down and made sure it was on securly. Replaced the heatsink.. and low and behold... A BEEP! THEN A GREEN LED LIGHT ON THE MONITOR. It booted up properly and it's just a matter of installing some drivers that somehow went away, but other than that.. everything is fine. Thanks a lot for your help and now we can add "a loose cpu" as a suggestion for this problem.
Thanks again very much!!

Ray

We're glad you got if fixed. I'd thought about mentioning reseating the cpu but I've ruined a few motherboards in my clumsy attempts to remove the cpu heatsinks. So I usually don't mention it right away.
