Hello all,
I am putting together a computer for my buddy and i couldn't get it to boot from the cd rom to install windows. I tried using a maxtor startup disk because the hdd was not detected in the bios. The floppy disk didn't work. It said it could not start dos. So I made a windows startup disk and tried that, it said i/o error hit any key i think. i did that twice and restarted the computer now i get no video, no beeps, the fans are all on but the cd drive will not open and the floppy light doesn't come on any more. I unhooked everything (hd, cd, floppy, took out the ram) and still no beeps but the fans come so it has power. i also tried the jumper thing to clear cmos-that didn't work. I tried jumping the power switch and it started but did the same thing (no video no beep). I don't suppose i have bought faulty parts since they worked an hour ago. I assure you i did not mess with anything with stuff plugged in and everything was grounded. Now i am afraid i will have to buy new parts for my friend.

You say you took out the RAM. It's not going to boot up without ram so you need to put that back. Keep all the drives disconnected and cards removed until you get it to post.

Make sure the cpu, heatsink and fan are properly installed. You may need to swap out the ram, if possible.

yes i took the ram out and nothing changed. I put it back in, but i was reading other posts on the topic and read that i should get a beep code about bad memory if the ram was out. I got nothing though, so I put it back in. Sound like a bad mobo or cpu? Im scratching my head.

Maybe the BIOS got hanged.I too got similar problems.you can try one thing...take out the processor from its socket..then short the power supply pins on the motherboard...i.e. pins which connect to your power button on the CPU.
Hopefully this will work out and you will get a display.Tell me if it worked.

best of luck.

Yeah, you'd think the cpu or motherboard but sometimes stuff like that happens for no reason you can figure out and you fiddle around with it for awhile it starts working again. (Not a very technical explaination, I know.)

You may want to pull the motherboard out and reinstall it. Make sure it's not being grounded to the case except at the mounting studs. Double check the cpu, ram and motherboard power connectors. If the power supply has a 115/230 voltage switch, make sure it's in the correct position.

A bad or misinstalled cpu fan will do exactly what you are describing.

I dont understand how it could be installed improperly. I also dont understand why the fans would be working and nothing else if the fan wasnt in right. I took the mobo completely out of the case to make sure it wasnt grounding out and i disconnected everything but the ram,no beeps, and then took the ram out too, no beeps. I guess im gonna try and swap out the cpu and mobo and see what happens.

If the cpu fan is faulty the mobo will not allow anything to operate to protect the cpu.
