I Have just completed a fresh install of Windows XP. Everything works except AUDIO!!!
I've got on-board audio, so I had to download the motherboard drivers and install them. Speaker Icon is now visible as well as RealTek HD Audio Manager Icon. Device Manager tells me everything is working properly, no drivers missing, no "Device not Working Properly" Yellow Icons.
But I still have NO AUDIO!! I've checked every setting (such as changing the default "speakers" to "headphones" - I only use headphones), running diagnostic software tests, and checking BIOS, but NOTHING, still NO AUDIOMy system is a Pentium 4 with Win XP SP2.
As I said, I've installed the only 2 audio drivers available for my Gigabyte GA-945P-DS3/S3 Motherboard, and at this point I don't know what else I could try.GG

Double click the speaker icon. Make sure no lines are muted and all sound volumes are turned up.
Open the Realtek audio manager and change to 2 speaker. Plug in the headphones and see if the manager detects them. Make sure all volumes are turned up in the mixer tab and nothing is muted.
Did you connect the headphone line to the motherboard properly?
Try plugging your headphones into the mic line. Do you get sound?

In addion to what voltage stated you may also need to configure which port you are using to feed the speakers. They are not hard wired.
Look in the Realtek Sound MAnager for an Audio I/O tab. That is where you configure the ports. This varies depending on your speaker system.
If you don't see the above tabs then you most likely have the wrong version of the drivers. There are many many variations of Realtek HD drivers. You need to use the drivers from the motherboard maker for your board.
