HELP! I have been having trouble with the sound on my laptop. I have the dreaded red x on my sound icon. I have uninstalled, downloaded, and updated every driver i can find only to have them fail because No Media Device can be found. I have updated my BIOS. I have tried reinstalling the driver using recovery manager, i have done a full system recovery to the original factory settings. there is no "sound, video, and game controllers" in my device manager. i have played email tag with to get this resolved. sound will return once in a blue moon only to have it disappear the next time i turn the computer on. My computer uses Conexant HD Audio Smart Audio 221.

if anyone has any ideas other than what i have tried about please let me know.

As kuwese stated there may well be an option to disable in the BIOS (setup) screens. I can see where that might be useful on a laptop.

If that isn't the case then you have a problem with the motherboard because the sound chip is integrated on the board.

The link below may be of some help.
