no audio ouput device is installed

Specs: Windows 7
my computer has been experiencing sound problems for quite a while now. It originally came with windows vista preinstalled on it, i have upgraded to windows 7 but the sound problems are still present.

i have the error message "no audio ouput device is installed" when i move my cursor over my sound icon which also has a red X on it.
on occasion the sound will kick in and work normally until i reboot or shut down the computer then the above message of death will be displayed.

when the message is displayed i cannot see my sound device in device manager "conexant hd audio" also when the sound has worked i have then installed the latest sound driver from the hp website it installs correctly but i still lose sound when i turn off or restart my computer.

i assume its not device related because it will still kick in and work properly till i shut down with no interruptions. any ideas what could be causing this or how to fix it myself?
