I posted previously about my computer having died, and the symptoms were fairly non-specific. After a couple of weeks of contemplation, I finally went out and bought a new video card - and now it works!! Well, at least, I get a picture on my screen now, and the computer boots up. But now I have a new problem...

It boots up and gives me a message that Windows couldn't load, possibly because of a hardward change. Then it gives me to option to boot in safe mode. When I choose this, a whole lot of file names/paths scroll across the screen, and then it just locks up. Any other option I choose besides safe mode just locks up right there. What's happening here?

Everything I read says you have to uninstall the old drivers before installing a new card, but I couldn't do this because my computer wouldn't boot up before I got this new card. Could this be causing the problem? If so, what do I need to do?

Help!!

Thanks,
Tracey

Did you change any of the hardwear besides the video card? If you only got a different card then that isnt the problem because windows should boot up just fine with the card using its own drivers for it, I would suggest formatting and reinstalling windows if possible, if not.. well.. Other people will post soon with their suggestions. Lol

Restart and continually tap the F8 key as the computer boots up, from the Advanced Options Menu try Enable VGA Mode, if you still cannot load windows in order to remove the old driver you will have to try a repair install of XP.

You DO NOT want to reformat the drive at this point !!!

What is it I'm supposed to be getting when I tap F8? I just keep getting that "we couldn't load windows" screen.

No, I didn't mess with the hard drive. I decided to get an external case, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Keep 'em coming, cause it's still not working yet.

Is the new video card AGP swap out or AGP to replace onboard or PCI to replace onboard AGP?

It's an AGP swap-out. No onboard video.

"What is it I'm supposed to be getting when I tap F8?".......the Advanced Options Menu

If you can not even get that to load, you need to try a repair install like I suggested earlier.

Do not type anything in this space.
