Comment:

I recently ordered some Crucial memory (after doing the scan) and I also got a new video card (XFX GeForce 9800 GT).

My current issue is that, at the moment, I have 1 GB of RAM (2 512 sticks). When I try to install the RAM (2 1GB sticks) I just bought from Crucial, my computer boots up like this:

Shows the GPU information:
"9800 GT VGA BIOS etc..."

and then it goes into the screen where you hit DEL and you enter BIOS...

and then it beeps once, and then it returns back to the GPU information.

It continues like that indefinitely.

Both of the RAM worked before I plugged in the new video card, but I don't recall ever hearing that a new video card caused issues with RAM.

My mother board is an ASUS A8N-E, if that helps.

I haven't changed my motherboard since I scanned for RAM on Crucial so I really don't know what the issue is.

Please and thank you for any help!

EDIT: So to make things more clear, right now I have 1 GB of RAM and I'm running the 9800 GT.

I would LIKE to be running with 3GB of RAM and the 9800 Gt.

I also switched the PSU recently to one with higher wattage and amps on the 12v rail.

You need to be more specific about your hardware. Which PSU did you have & which PSU did you upgrade to? We need to know the make/model, wattage & amperage specs for both. Sounds to me like the PSU you bought *may* be inadequate for your new card. Try putting your old video card back in & see if it will boot up.

Before you bought any RAM you should have pulled your existing RAM & checked the specs (speed, voltage, timings). But as long as you bought DDR400 (aka PC3200), you *should* be OK. It pays to shop around. Frys.com recently had Crucial 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR400 for $15 after rebate with free shipping.

It's also possible that you need to update the BIOS. The latest version fixes "system hangs on POST while installing some PCI-E x16 VGA cards."

Hmm, yeah, I was thinking about updating my BIOS too, but apparently it's really dangerous and I'm quite afraid to do so.

MY old PSU was a Turbolink 400W, 18A on the 12V rail.

The new one, I don't quite know the name of, but I do know it's 500W and it has 28A on the 12v rail.

My GPU says it requires 400W minimum and a 26A on the 12v rail, so I think it's sufficient.

I have the BIOS stuff on my desktop and I just installed the chipset, but like I said I'm a little concerned, just how dangerous is it to upgrade BIOS?

Nevermind--I flashed my BIOS and it worked, thank you very much!

Glad it worked out :-)
