ok im getting pissed, i just built a great system and its not what i expected, i have a 2800+. GeForce 5900se, 1 gig of pc3200 at 400mhz on dual channel, a DFI lan party nforce 2 ultra b board, the games are kind of laggy, sometimes the mouse lags, i dont know what to do, is the hard drive jsut running slow?, its a WD 120 gig hard drive with 8mb buffer and it goes at 7200 RPM, could it be that the cd-rom and hard drive are only on slave intead of primary, there on serperate cables.i dont know what to do, is it getting to hot in there? or could it be that windows 200 isnt very good for my system, maybe theres to many backround applications so it takes of my cpu? someone plz help, oh yah i have all the updates for video card and windows.

Too many background programs seems like a good place to start. Use msconfig and/or the `Close Program' window to shut them down for a test.

The questions are all ones that you would have to answer yourself. We dont know if you have too much running in the background, or if your drives are configured correctly.
In your Bios, you can see how your drives are set up.
Does this happen right from start up or does it take a while? What are your temps? Is this with all programs or just certain ones? Give us more info.

55 is getting into the higher areas but shouldnt be causing those problems, and windows2k is crap for games, perhaps youve overloaded windows 2k with 1 gb of ram although im not an expert on this. try taking 1 stick out and see what happens, sounds like that systems primarily for gaming if so get xp pro get rid of 2000.

Because of the way Windows 2000 processes graphics, that it's not a suitable OS for gaming. At least that's what I've read. Switching to XP might be something to try if you run out of other ideas.

Best Luck,
Bob

Just keep Win 2000 as it is, partition your drive (if it's not already), & install Win XP on the D: partition to create a dual boot setup

I doubt XP will make much of a difference. Most of the "improvements" from 2000 to XP are in the user-interface. If you're using the latest drivers (NVidia's being the most important), you probably won't notice a difference. Windows 2000 is NT 5.0, and XP is 5.1. Even 2003 isn't much different at 5.2. Longhorn, however, will be 6.0, and will have major system changes.

I have one quick question- what is your power supply rated at?
You need at least 350w in modern systems and 420w-450w is recomended.
Another thing is you stated in your post that the hard drive and the cd/rom are set up as slaves? Or is this a typo?
If you only have one hard drive on the one cable remove the jumper from the hard drive.
Hope this helps.

Who Knew?

not true...300 watt is the minimum, but the important thing to look for is the amps on the +12v rail. Personally, I'd say go for 18amps or better. A weak PSU won't slow your system, but it will cause instability problems such as random reboots
