CPU/Ram: 2GHz 256 ram
Comment:

I have a PCChips (or ECS) M922 motherboard and Pentium 4 2GHz. I currently have 256 stick of single drive ram. i got a 512 stick of PC2100 DDR 266 stick for christmas, but when i put it in my computer it will just freeze on boot. the motherboard is supposed to be able to use PC2100. Also, if i put both sticks in (yes i know they can't run together...) then it will go through the boot and when it gets to the memory check it will recognize all 512, but then it will get stuck at the windows starting up screen and with n error
that says something like windows cannot find and reinstall Windows 2000 root>/system32/ntoskrnl.exe dunno if that means anything, but i'm just trying to cover eveything :)
any help or suggestions?

First of all, have you tried removing the stick of RAM and booting up? That sounds more like a problem in Windows than with the hardware, but don't quote me on that. Its worth a try either way. That way you can find out if its actually the hardware (which if it goes to the windows boot screen and registers all 512 MB, then it doesn't quite sound like it) or if its your installation of windows.

We are Microsoft; resistance is futile.

You can't run both DDR-SDRAM (PC2100) & SDR-SDRAM (PC100/PC133), you can only use one or the other...but it sounds like you tried both at once - "if i put both sticks in"?

Is the new memory compatible with the board?, and as you know it has to be either SDRAM or DDR SDRAM, not both simultaneously.

The board also requires either a 184-pin 2.5V unbuffered DIMM module(s) for DDR SDRAM.

Yeah, i put both sticks in at once just to see what happened cuz using just the 512 wasn't working, i wasn't trying to run them together, but it actually makes it farther in start up with both than with just the 512. i will try removing all the ram and try starting up and see what happens as you suggested. also the only way it will register the 512 is if both sticks are are in although they are not compatible. I don't have the manual as i bought the board and the rest of my comp off of pricewatch years ago, but i'v looked online and form what i'v read my mobo should be able to support up to DDR 266 thus the PC2100

Well then, go to PCChips & download the manual...I had no trouble finding it. Read thru it & see if there's a jumper or BIOS setting that has to be changed. Don't continue trying to run them both at once or you may find yourself in the market for a new board, new RAM, or both
