Hello guys. I've got a major problem. I'm not sure if this should be in this forum in the XP forum but I guess that depends on the solution. If any of you can provide me with any guidance on this i'd be eternally grateful.

I've recently bought a new processor for my computer. It is an AMD Duron 1800 266FSB CPU - OEM. Having installed it in place of my old 1100mhz it only showed as the computer was booting up as being 1350mhz. Because of this I went into the BIOS and changed the FSB setting or whatever it's called to 133mhz. It then showed as being an 'unknown processor at 1800mhz', which I assumed was fine.

Here's the problem: When I boot into Windows XP, I get a message saying 'Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close, do you want to send an error report?'. If I click yes I can't get onto the internet to send it anyway because XP hasn't loaded up my broadband before the error message shows up. If I say 'Don't send' then XP simply starts again and gives me the same error message. If I start in safe mode then it still happens. Is it just coincidence that this has happened after i've been fiddling about with a new processor? And what can I do to rectify the situation? All my motherboard details are shown below. Please help or advise if you can because without being able to boot into my desktop i'm in trouble!

PS. I tried the new processor with a hard drive that has Windows 98 SE on it too and it did the same thing. BUT if I left it at 1350mhz it was fine. So what's the deal? I wish I was a computer expert :-(

Perhaps it is a 1350Mhz CPU and you got ripped off? The only reason I can see as to why you get the error is because of the "overclocking" of it to the speed you want it it at... But Im not a overclocking expert either. So... Thats ust my two cents!

This link takes you to someone with similar questions about jetway boards and CPU problems. you should be able to follow links to motherboard manuals and info from jetway to work out for sure whether your board does support the 1800 and if a bios update may be needed.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. It is definitely an 1800mhz processor, I can make it out on the chip itself. I'll have a look at the other link now before I catch my forty winks. Cheers again.

I am probably wrong but...
"Real Clock 100 MHz (DDR)
Effective Clock 200 MHz"
The processor uses Double Data Rate bus providing the 200MHz effective rate.

The FSB for the MOBO is 100MHz.
The chipset is capable of higher settings but the MOBO is not.

I believe 1350 is the best you will get out of it.

For your sake I hope I am wrong.

Well not to worry if the mobo won't support the processor. It can be sold on Ebay and i'll go back to my 1100mhz processor! Out of interest though, can anyone tell me exactly what speed processor my motherboard could support? If you can keep it simpl i'd be grateful, i don't understand things like FSB and DDR!

Thanks Bryan. The question remains though...why on earth does XP keep shutting Explorer down?! This happens even now i've returned to my old 1100mhz processor.

Your original post was Jul 21.
If this was the date when you changed your clocks then use a Restore Point of the day before or the same day before the change.

Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.
