Comment:

I recently installed a new power jack for my inspiron 1150 because the old one broke off. I ordered and soldered the new part on myself very carefully, but i still do not receive power to my computer. The lights up front blink once when I first plug the charger into the jack, but it will not continue charging. Any suggestions??

Modern circuit boards are very complicated, and can be multi layer. I would think that if the jack "broke off" from the board, that there is a high possibility that some trace is torn/ broken. All I can suggest is that you try some tracing with an ohm-meter.

Hey, I appreciate the help, but could you elaborate a little more on how to trace with an ohm-meter...And if you say a trace could be torn or broken, would that eliminate being able to fix that specific part? Would I need a new motherboard altogether?

If it was working OK before breaking off and you soldered it correctly then when it broke off and/or when you repaired it, additional damage may have occurred.

Use a DC voltmeter to check the voltage output of the adapter.

Is the laptop supposed to run with just the adapter/charger connected? If so, try removing the battery and see if it'll run.
