Hi all;
My dad has purchased (refurbished) a new PC. He'd like to use the HDD (it has Windows 98SE on it) from his old PC as a data drive in his new PC. Now, how do I go about wiping out the old OS from it, but yet keep the personal files he has on it? I know about putting it in the new PC and setting it up as a slave, etc. But I'm a little confused about the process for keeping his personal files and not wiping them out if I was to reformat it.

You don't need to eliminate WIN98 OS.
He can identify the "personal" files and put them in a folder. Then just delete everything else ... and hope that he selected all those things he didn't want to delete.

Or just connect the old HDD as slave & use it as is - without deleting anything. After all, Windows 98 is not really taking a huge chunk of space on the old HDD or is it?

And for safety sake... before you decide to play with the '98 drive... Whilst it's in own system, copy off those files etc. to removable media (cd/dvd); verify they are readable both by the '98 and the new (XP) system. Then proceed as you wish with that '98 drive. And also regularly check and update those cd/dvd copies...
Truly readable copies (on cd/dvd etc.) are invariably nice to have (en avance) in the event of problems with any PC system.
